The High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) is the main United Nations platform on sustainable development and it has a central role in the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the global level.

The 2022 HLPF had as a main theme and focus “Building back better from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) while advancing the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. The HLPF also reviewed in-depth the SDG 4 on quality education; the SDG 5 on gender equality; the SDG 14 on life below water; the SDG 15 on life on land; and finally the SDG 17 on partnerships for the Goals.

The Aquatic Blue Food Coalition at the HLPF 2022

As part of the forum program, the Aquatic Blue Food Coalition co-hosted with the Small-Scale Fisheries Resource and Collaboration Hub (SFF Hub), GRO-FTP (Fisheries Training Programme) and WorldFish One CGIAR a side event titled: “Women in Small-Scale Fisheries and Aquaculture”. The event discussed the crucial roles that women play in small-scale fishing and aquaculture operations, the impacts of COVID-19 on small-scale actors, and the ways that their communities have been building from these challenges.

Representatives from small-scale fisheries and government officials gathered to discuss ways to build back from COVID-19 and achieve the SDGs while benefitting the livelihoods of women in small-scale fishing communities and support policy action for achieving SDGs 5 and 14.
